Sardar Patel: New Delhi

Strange but true today it is quite forgotten that Sardar Patel lived at that the house, 1- Aurangzeb Road, in New Delhi for four years and toiled to weave together the physical fabric of the nation. The fact remains unknown and unsung.

It seems to be that the right to erect memorials in the national capital must necessarily be the prerogative of some political families only.

Patel had a different world view. A year before his death in 1949, he said, 'I have considered myself a soldier in the service of Hindustan and I shall be a soldier to the end of my life. May I cease to exist when I deflect from this path of service.'

यह एक हैरतअंगेज सच है कि आज इस बात को बिसरा दिया गया है कि सरदार पटेल ने चार साल तक नई दिल्ली स्थित 1-औरंगजेब रोड के घर में रहते हुए असंख्य रियासतों वाले ब्रिटिश इंडिया के एकीकरण की कठिन और महत्वपूर्ण प्रक्रिया के दायित्व का वहन करते हुए भारत को स्वाभाविक भौगोलिक एकता प्रदान की। यह तथ्य अनजाना और अप्रचारित ही है ।
ऐसा लगता है कि देश की राजधानी में स्मारक बनाने का अधिकार, कुछ चुनींदा राजनीतिक परिवारों का ही विशेषाधिकार बन गया है । पटेल की एक भिन्न विश्व दृष्टि थी । उन्होंने अपनी मृत्यु के एक वर्ष (1949) पहले कहा था, मैं स्वयं को हिंदुस्तान की सेवा करने वाला एक सैनिक मानता हूं और मैं अपने जीवन के अंत तक एक सैनिक ही बना रहूंगा । अगर मैं इस सेवा पथ से डिगा तो मैं रहूंगा ही नहीं।
