In Delhi, there are 1208 heritage buildings out of which 174 monuments are protected by the Government of India.
As per Delhi Development Authority Master Plan 2021, there are 1208 heritage buildings which have been identified out of which 174 monuments are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Archaeological Survey of India is responsible for maintaining centrally protected monuments declared as of National Importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 and Rules, 1959.
These 174 Centrally Protected Monuments are under the jurisdiction of Delhi Circle of Archaeological Survey of India. It has mapped/documented all the centrally protected monuments under the jurisdiction of Delhi Circle in the capital. The Centrally protected monuments are maintained and conserved as per the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 and Rules, 1959, Amendment and Validation Act, 2010.
In last three years an amount of Rs. 927.56 lakh (2011-12), Rs. 1100.98 lakh (2012-13) and 1301.98 lakh (2013-14) have been spent on the conservation of these monuments.
The Archaeological Survey of India has deployed watch & ward staff and engaged the services of private security guards and Armed Police personnel for the safety and protection of centrally protected monuments in Delhi.
