In the first phase, four metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai were digitized by 31.10.2012. The multi-system operators issued total number of 84.89 lakhs Set Top Boxes for installation in the four metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai till March 2013.In the second phase, 38 cities were to be digitized by 31.3.2013. The multi-system operators issued 218.22 lakhs STBs for installation in the 38 cities.
The Government has always encouraged the domestic manufacturing sector to take advantage of the Cable TV Digitisation initiative. It is expected that the domestic industry will get a fillip as Department of Telecommunication has now confirmed that Set Top Boxes are a part of Telecommunications Network vide letter No. 18-06/2014-IP dated 30.6.2014.
