पूरे दिवस
पंख फैलाए
अलग अलग उड़ते दो पंछी
रात में
खिड़की के छज्जे पर
गलबहियाँ डालते दो पंछी
दो शब्दों का जोड़ है
स्मृति
नीरवता में खोज
कई मील की दूरी पर फैला
गिरे हुए हवाई जहाज का मलबा
और कंघा
खाड़ी-जमा राशि
खोजो और जोड़ लो
दृष्टि में,
रहस्यों के संसार में पग धरो
सुरा की दो खाली सुराहियाँ
और एक
तुम्हारे मुँह लगी
बीड़ी का
एक कुचला हुआ पूड़ा
और उससे अलग
साबुत बची सिर्फ एक बीड़ी
हमारी हथेलियों के विस्तार में,
चार रतजगी आँखें अभी भी खुली हैं
हमारी खुली आँखें
आखिर बिस्तर की चादर
पर उन कीड़े सरीखे धब्बों
का रंग क्या था ?
दो शब्दों का जोड़ है
स्मृति
हमने पाया
दोनों तरफ पंछी चुप हैं
मैं अचरज में हूँ
किसने मुझे बिस्तर में भी
रतजगा रखा है ?
पंछी जो मुझे याद नहीं आते
या जिन्हें मैं भूल नहीं पाता

two birds that fly apart
all day,
two birds that huddle
on the window sill at night.
remember is two words
which in the quiet, search
over miles, the wreckage
of a crash. and comb
the bays, and collect.
find and put together.
which in plain sight, walk
among mysteries.
two green bottles of beer
empty, and one to your
mouth.
a pack of cigarettes
crushed, and the last one just
put out.
in the tent of our palms,
four still eyes are still eyes.
our still eyes.
and what was the colour
of the moth shaped stains
on the bedcover?
remember is two words
we discover
as two birds that are quiet
on either side.
i wonder which of them
keeps me awake in bed?
birds of things i can't recall,
or birds of things i can't forget.
