Nalanda University

''Nalanda University (which existed in Bihar during the early fifth century and the 12th century) received patronage from Hindu kings (such as the Guptas) as well as from Buddhist kings (such as the Palas of Bengal). It was not, in any sense, a specifically Buddhist institution, but it was in the general Buddhist tradition of focussing on knowledge and understanding as ways of solving problems that pester humanity but “violently destroyed” in an Afghan attack led by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193."

बिहार में पांचवीं सदी के प्रारंभ से लेकर और 12 वीं सदी तक अस्तित्व में रहे नालंदा विश्वविद्यालय को गुप्त वंश के हिन्दू राजाओं के साथ साथ बंगाल के पाॅल वंश के बौद्ध राजाओं से संरक्षण मिला। यह किसी भी सीमित अर्थ में एक बौद्ध संस्थान न होकर मानवता के समक्ष समस्याओं के समाधान के उपायों के लिए ज्ञान और प्रज्ञा के अध्ययन पर केंद्रित बौद्ध परंपरा का संस्थान था। वर्ष 1193 में एक अफगान आक्रांता बख्तियार खिलजी के नेतृत्व में हुए हिंसक हमले में इसे समाप्त कर दिया।
