Hard to Believe

Today when Indian women are ready to done the role of combat in Indian Armed Forces one would hardly  believe that in the initial years of independent India, the total strength of women civil officers was minuscule. 

In year 1955, 25 women officers were working in Central Government. Ten women officers were in Central Secretariat Service, nine in All India Services and six in Indian Foreign Services.

Out of these women officers, ten were married and five had children. The length of their service ranged from less than one year to more than seven years.

आज जब देश की महिलाएं भारतीय सेना की युद्धक इकाइयों में भी अहम भूमिका निभाने को तत्पर हैं, ऐसे में इस बात पर यकीन करना कठिन होगा कि स्वतंत्र भारत के आंरभिक वर्षों में, सेना तो क्या नागरिक प्रशासन में महिला अधिकारियों की उपस्थिति नगण्य थी।

वर्ष 1955 में, भारत सरकार में 25 महिला अधिकारी कार्यरत थीं। इनमें से दस महिला अधिकारी केंद्रीय सचिवालय सेवा में, नौ महिला अधिकारी अखिल भारतीय सेवाओं में और छह महिला अधिकारी भारतीय विदेश सेवा में नियुक्त थीं।

इन महिला अधिकारियों में से दस विवाहित थीं और पांच महिला अधिकारियों के बच्चे थे। इन महिला अधिकारियों की सेवा का कार्यकाल एक वर्ष से कम से लेकर अधिकतम सात वर्ष तक का था।
