Athar'al-Sanadid:Syed Ahmed Khan
Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University, was born, and lived, in Delhi. He was greatly interested in its monuments which he surveyed and studied in-situ, meticulously copied their Arabic and Persian inscriptions and commissioned his artist Mirza Shah Rukh Beg Musawwir to draw their sketches.
He consulted 41 Sanskrit and Persian works of History which were then available; these works have been listed in his Preface.
With this material, he authored his work: "Athar'al-Sanadid", in Urdu, and published it in 1846. This was the FIRST work on this subject. It contained immensely useful historical and architectural data for the study of nearly 160 monuments of Delhi, built over a long span of time, from c.1192 to 1846 A.D., besides a few relics of the ancient period. Soon
it became popular in India and abroad.
